Improving Carlisle Railway Station
Cumbria County Council - in partnership with Carlisle City Council, Network Rail and Avanti West Coast - has secured £20 million of funding through the Borderlands Inclusive Growth Deal for improvements to Carlisle Railway Station.
This investment represents not only significant regeneration of the city, but a key transformational project in the Borderlands region's future connectivity.

Improving connectivity with high speed rail network
Strengthening Carlisle’s position in the national rail network, this investment will improve connectivity to, from and within the Borderlands region.
This project will improve connectivity and access for Carlisle and the Borderlands. By improving access, shops and cafés, facilities and onward travel options at Carlisle Railway Station, it will boost the appeal of the city centre and support passenger growth.

Grow the regional role of the station by prioritising usability and accessibility, as well as improving parking and drop-off facilities

Create a gateway by providing high-quality entrances and exits to the station, enhancing historic buildings, encouraging visitors, and better connecting to and showcasing the city

Future-proof the station ensuring accessibility by greener forms of transport and by making it safer to use
At the heart of the city's transformation
Carlisle Railway Station, located in the city centre, is a key part of the national rail network. It accommodates more than two million passengers every year and acts as a major interchange for the entire Borderlands region.
The Station Gateway project is at the heart of the wider transformation of Carlisle City Centre, taking place over the next five years to ensure that Carlisle reaches its full potential as the hub of the Borderlands area.
To date £100 million of investment has been secured for Carlisle.
